Independence Day weekend

Monday, June 27, 2016

Dear Neighbor,

Greetings and here's wishing you and your family a happy and safe Independence Day holiday this coming weekend. I hope are able to join in the festivities with friends and family as we celebrate our great nation's independence.

I encourage folks to stop and take some time as we celebrate our independence to think about the history of our nation and what our service men and women have given. Our nation's story is really amazing when you think about where we began with our forefathers' bold Declaration of Independence and where we are today. The decisions our country's founders made were courageous and the concept they had in establishing the United States of America is something of which we can all be proud.

Let's also think about the many men and women of our military who have sacrificed so much to ensure the freedoms we have come to enjoy as Americans. Remember, there are a number of folks serving overseas right now that will be celebrating from afar instead of on American turf with their friends and loved ones. Thanks for your service and sacrifice to our nation.

If you have a veteran, firefighter, law enforcement or first responder in your family, or are one yourself, please consider putting your name on the memorial that will be located just off Highway 23 in Rockville. It is quite an honor to have the name etched in granite for all your family to see into the future. The dedication will happen on Sept. 11, 2016 and names should be in by July 1, 2016 to be on the monument for the dedication. Click here for more information.

The monument committee just received a piece of the World Trade Center to be placed alongside the monument. We believe this is the first of its kind in the Midwest, what an addition to what will be an excellent tribute to all who serve our country, state and communities!

On a separate note, a number of new laws take effect July 1. This includes a supplemental budget bill that was passed during the 2016 session. It includes provisions related to K-12 education, higher education, health and human services, agriculture, jobs, public safety, broadband expansion and more. Click here for a full rundown.

Please be safe as we celebrate over the Fourth of July.

Good luck,

Jeff
