Legislative Update (June 24, 2016)

Friday, June 24, 2016

Dear Neighbors,

I hope you’re having a great summer, and are enjoying some time outside with family and friends. We’re no longer in the legislative session, but I want to make sure you’re updated on everything happening in St. Paul and our area.

Teacher Loan Assistance

Thanks to a Republican-led provision passed last year, many teachers are eligible for a new loan forgiveness program. Currently, Minnesota has a teacher shortage, and this program is designed to help put more teachers in the classroom. If you’re a teacher, or know someone who can benefit from this program, the deadline to submit applications is Thursday, June 30. Please click here for more information on this great initiative!

Special Session

Legislative leaders continue to work with the governor to come to an agreement on a special session to repass our $800 middle-class tax relief bill, and the bipartisan bonding/transportation proposal. The governor vetoed the tax legislation because of a fixable, one-word error. I’m hopeful, at the very least, the governor will agree to let us make this small change and provide tax relief for working families, recent college graduates, and small business owners.

Likewise, the bonding and transportation bill contains a number of great provisions to help our area and Minnesota as a whole. Included in this bill was my language to improve the transit station at the Mall of America. I hope we can come to an agreement and bring needed funding to Minnesota’s roads and bridges.

Around Town

There’s lots to love about our area, but one of my favorite things is the sense of community. We always have amazing events that are fun for the whole family. Just around the corner on July 3 is Bloomington’s Summer Fete. There will be a kids’ carnival, a number of great food vendors, and a fireworks display at dusk. I hope to see you there!

Although it’s over a month away, don’t forget to register for the 33rd National Night Out. I love bringing my kids to this event to spend time with our neighbors. If you need more information on how to register, click here.

Please Contact Me

Although it’s summer, I hope you will continue to call or email and share your opinion. Please contact my office, and I’ll be sure to get back to you.

Enjoy your weekend,

Chad
