Legislative Update (June 24, 2016)

Friday, June 24, 2016

Dear Neighbors,

Happy summer! Days like this remind us what Minnesota summers are all about. Before you head outside, I wanted to give you a quick update from St. Paul.

Teacher Loan Assistance

Last year, my colleague, Peggy Bennett of Albert Lea, authored a great bill to combat the teacher shortage in our state. The initiative helps educators pay back their student loans, helping to put more teachers in classrooms. The deadline to apply is coming up quick; Thursday, June 30. I know there’s lots of teachers in our district, and I encourage them to click here to find out more. If you still have questions, please call my office.

Helping Our Veterans

One of the most important provisions passed into law this year assists 18,000 retired military veterans in our state. The language we passed exempts military retirement pay from state income taxes, and goes a long way to help our former service men and women. We’re always grateful for veterans’ sacrifice, and this bill helps to recognize their service. Recently, three representatives and a number of other military members wrote a letter to the Star Tribune advocating for this provision. Please click here to give it a read.
