RELEASE: Rep. Sandstede statement on USW/Cliffs labor deal

Monday, October 1, 2018

HIBBING, Minn. – On Sunday, a tentative four-year labor agreement was reached between members of the United Steelworkers and Cleveland-Cliffs, which owns the United Taconite and Hibbing Taconite mines. State Representative Julie Sandstede (DFL – Hibbing) released the following statement:

“I congratulate the hardworking members of the USW and the management at Cliffs for reaching a contract settlement which treats workers fairly. This agreement is the result of good-faith negotiations and removes economic uncertainty for those currently working and retirees alike. Further, this agreement demonstrates Cliff’s strong commitment to the state of Minnesota and our workers.

“I urge USW and ArcelorMittal to quickly follow suit and reach an agreement. Especially with market conditions booming, it’s critical that workers have the opportunity to provide for themselves and their families. Many people have worked hard to improve our economic climate, and a strike would threaten that progress. This is all about respect, and I hope this can be resolved soon.”

Rep. Sandstede encourages constituents to reach out to her anytime. She can be reached by phone at 651-296-0172 or email at rep.julie.sandstede@house.mn.
