RELEASE: Rep. Mariani statement on North Star school accountability data

Friday, August 31, 2018

SAINT PAUL, Minn — Yesterday, the Minnesota Department of Education released Minnesota school performance data through its new North Star accountability system. The new North Star system uses five key indicators to identify and learn from schools that consistently perform at high levels, replacing a decades-old system based solely on test scores. 526 schools were recognized as top performers, while 485 schools were identified to receive support over the next three years.

Rep. Carlos Mariani (DFL - St. Paul), DFL-lead on the Minnesota House Education Innovation Policy Committee, released the following statement:

"Parents and educators in our state are increasingly committing to equity and to confronting racial and income disparities experienced by students in our public schools. This multiple measures approach by the Department of Education gives Minnesotans a fuller and ‘real-world’ look at how their schools are doing to drive quality learning for all students.”

An Excel file containing North Star accountability data can be accessed on the department’s website. To find information about schools recognized for excellence or prioritized for support, and learn what factors led to their identifications, parents and community members can visit the Minnesota Report Card.
