Legislative Update - July 20, 2018

Friday, July 20, 2018

Dear Neighbors:

I hope that you’re having a good summer. There’s a lot going on in our state and country. This will be the last legislative update that I send before November - see below - but I wanted to pass along notes on a few items on my calendar that may be of interest for the summer and fall.

Minnesota Human Trafficking Task Force - Monday

As you may know, I serve outside of the Legislature as a prosecutor and have led statewide training and other efforts against human trafficking. If this is an issue of interest to you, you may want to check out the Minnesota Human Trafficking Task Force, a great opportunity to connect with others in this work. The next quarterly meeting is this Monday morning at the Wilder Foundation; registration and more info here.

National Night Out - August 7

Reminder about the opportunity to connect with neighbors at National Night Out, held this year on Tuesday, August 7. Look for an NNO celebration in your neighborhood. Hope to see you out there!

Property Tax and Renters Credit - Deadline August 15

Many Minnesotans qualify for a property tax refund or renter’s credit but forget to file. The deadline is August 15. Get information and apply for your refund online at the Department of Revenue’s Property Tax Refund website.

Toll Fellowship Program - late August

As I mentioned briefly in my last update, I’m honored to have been named Minnesota’s Toll Fellow for 2018, the nation’s premier leadership development opportunity for state government. Operated by the Council of State Governments, it brings together 48 leaders from around the country for an intensive program. Read more about the program here and view the rest of this year’s class of Toll Fellows here.

Progress on Early Childhood - October 10 and more

Thanks to all who attended Monday’s Prenatal to Three Forum at the University of St. Thomas, whether in person or via webcast. The next event in this quarterly series will be on October 10. More info at www.p3minnesota.org. In the meantime, I continue to work with a variety of groups, at the state, county, and city levels, to develop an agenda for early childhood policy for 2019 and beyond.

Keep in Touch

Campaign finance rules properly prevent legislators from sending blast email updates like these in the months before an election period, and so this is the last update you will receive from my Capitol office until after the election. In the meantime, keep in touch via my office’s Facebook page, and don’t hesitate to reach out via phone or email anytime.

Thank you for the honor of serving you and our community again during the 2017-2018 legislative session. All the best.
