Knoblach responds to governor's failure to enact tax bill

Tuesday, June 7, 2016

ST. PAUL – State Rep. Jim Knoblach, R-St. Cloud, on Tuesday expressed disappointment in Gov. Mark Dayton's failure to enact half a billion dollars in permanent, ongoing middle-class tax relief over the next three years before the bill expired at midnight.

"I am disappointed the governor would not enact a bill that had overwhelming support from both sides of the aisle as it passed the Legislature," said Knoblach, who chairs the House Ways and Means Committee. "Republicans and DFLers alike lauded this package of tax relief as we sent it to the governor to enact. House Republicans agreed to make two changes the governor requested, fixing a drafting error and restoring a small sales tax exemption. But, instead of facilitating that action, the governor instead allowed a historic package of tax relief to die on the vine. If he felt he needed a special session to make the two changes he desired, instead of simple letters from committee chairs as has been done in the past, he should call an immediate one day special session to remedy this situation."
