News from Rep. Peggy Bennett 6-3-2016

Friday, June 3, 2016

Dear Neighbors,

We’re already almost two weeks since the end of the legislative session, but there’s still significant news to pass along. Some great provisions are becoming law, and there’s a possibility for more in the future.

Assisting Veterans

Recently, the governor signed our supplemental budget into law. One of the great provisions I supported goes to help veterans who retire in our state. The language includes a historic tax cut for veterans, exempting all military retirement benefits from state taxes. This will mean more money for around 18,000 retired veterans currently living in Minnesota. It is one of my favorite provisions this year, and has been a long time in coming for Minnesota veterans. I’m proud to vote for this bill to help our retired heroes.

The importance of our veterans really gets put in perspective when reflecting on the dangers involved in military service. As I spent time on Memorial Day honoring our fallen heroes, my thoughts went to Don and Debbie Goodnature of Albert Lea, and their son Corey. Chief Warrant Officer Corey Goodnature was a helicopter pilot on a special rescue mission when his helicopter was shot down in Afghanistan eleven years ago. There is something that really impacts the heart and brings home the reality of the ultimate sacrifice when a local son or daughter pays that price. May we never forget those who sacrificed all so that we can live free, and may we never forget to cherish those blessed freedoms that were fought for so dearly.

Broadband Funding

Another important part of our supplemental budget bill provides $35 million - a record high - in broadband infrastructure investment. When we combine with federal funds, Minnesota will see around $120 million of funding in 2017 alone.

Our students, small businesses, and local governments require high-speed access to stay connected with the rest of the world, and this funding will go a long way to closing this technological divide. This funding will go straight to the unserved and underserved portions of Greater Minnesota, I’m proud to vote for this bill and help bring internet to areas in need.
