Legislative Update

Legislative Update (May 26, 2016)

Dear Neighbors,

We concluded our legislative session on Sunday, and we passed some great bills to help our state, including $800 million in tax relief for middle-class Minnesotans. Here’s a quick update on what transpired at the end of session.

Tax Relief

One of the big bills we passed over the weekend helps provide middle-class tax relief for Minnesotans around the state. The bill provides $800 million of relief in the next three years. Small business owners, recent college grads, and military veterans will see a reduction in their taxes from our bill.

The bill is currently awaiting the governor’s signature. Because we passed the bill with such a wide bipartisan vote of 123-10, I’m hopeful the governor won’t waste any time and sign this agreement into law.

Local Projects

Although the House passed a bonding and transportation bill that would have helped our area, the Senate tried to add an amendment at the last minute and ran out of time. Had the bill passed, we could have seen a $700 million investment for Minnesota’s roads and bridges. Contained in the legislation was funding for Highway 10 to add another lane between Round Lake Blvd. and Hanson Blvd., the train crossing at Hanson Blvd, and money to start the cleanup of the Waste Disposal Engineering Landfill. Although the Senate failed to pass this bill, I’ll continue to push for these projects if there’s a special session.

Cattail Cleanup

As you know, I’ve been working to help Round Lake tackle their Narrow Leaf Cattail problem. Recently, Senator Jim Abeler and I met with homeowners on the lake to talk about possible solutions. We helped these residents obtain permits to remove the invasive plants on their property. This is still an issue we’re looking to solve, but we are already making progress.

Memorial Day

Monday marks a time where we must reflect on the men and women who gave their lives for our country. We owe them an unpayable debt, and are forever grateful for their service and sacrifice. If you’re interested in taking part in one of the Memorial Day services in our area, please click here.

Around Town

Just around the corner is the DEED Veterans Career Fair on Wednesday, July 13. The event is from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. at the Earle Brown Heritage Center in Brooklyn Center. Click here for more information.

Please Contact Me

Even though we’re out of session, I’d still like to hear from you with any ways I can be of service. Feel free to call or email my office and I’ll get right back to you.

Enjoy the weekend,

Peggy
