Legislative Update (May 23, 2016)

Monday, May 23, 2016

Dear Neighbors,

It’s been a crazy last few days of session, but I wanted to send you a quick update of what we know. First, the House and Senate passed a bill to provide more than $800 million of tax relief in the next three years. Middle-class families, recent college grads, military veterans, and small business owners will all see a benefit from our plan. With a $900 million surplus, we needed to give some back to residents of our state.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t all good news yesterday. After we passed a $700 million plan for roads and bridges, the Senate would only pass the bill if it included language to support Southwest Light Rail. It was the definition of putting politics before people. Had it passed, our area would have received $20 million to help reduce traffic on 35W in Burnsville. We intended to fund projects like this throughout the state, but the Senate doubled down on train transit over roads and bridges.

Although session adjourned, there’s still a couple issues left to be decided. I’ll continue to keep you posted on any developments.

Best,

Drew
