Legislative Update (5-20-16)

Friday, May 20, 2016

Dear Neighbors,

Yesterday, the House debated and voted on this year’s bonding bill where it ended up falling short of the 81 vote supermajority needed for passage. Although the bill did not pass, there is time to regroup and get a bill passed this year.
Generally speaking, I am not supportive of bonding bills. While there were provisions in this bill that concerned me, much of the bill is focused on roads, bridges, and infrastructure projects like water treatment plants. These are the kind of projects that bonding bills should focus on and that’s why I voted in favor of passage. It is my hope that these projects will be a part of a final bill passed by the House and Senate.
In other news, negotiations on tax and transportation bills are ongoing as we get closer to the end of the 2016 legislative session. I will have more information on these bills early next week as we will be working through the weekend to reach an agreement.
Stay tuned.
