News from Rep. Roz Peterson 5-17-2016

Tuesday, May 17, 2016
Dear Friends,

We are starting the last week of the legislative session, and we will be spending some long hours on the House floor from now through Sunday. We have made some great progress in the last few weeks, and I’m optimistic we will pass some great pieces of legislation in this final push.

Bills Signed by the Governor
This last week Governor Dayton signed a few bills into law that I sponsored in the House.

HF2613
HF2613 passed the House in a unanimous vote. This bill, now signed into law, will help coordinate and standardize ST- segment elevation myocardial infarctions (STEMI) systems and improve response time. Seconds count in getting a heart-attack victim care, and this provision should speed up that care. HF2514
This bill (now law) clarifies the definitions and parameters of the Host Community Economic Development grant program. “Host communities” are areas in the metro that have sites for disposing unprocessed, mixed solid waste, and these grants are aimed at encouraging economic growth and job creation in these communities.

Defining and clarifying the criteria for this program will make it more straightforward for host communities to assemble their applications, and streamline the process for approval. For more information, here is the House Public Information summary of the floor debate on this bill while it was in the House: http://www.house.leg.state.mn.us/sessiondaily/SDView.aspx?StoryID=10157

HF 2497
In last week’s newsletter I mentioned that the Senate companion to HF 2497, SF2555, passed the Senate. This bill, now in Minnesota statute, simplifies and streamlines the local zoning process for temporary health care living spaces, or drop homes. These drop homes are meant to provide another option to families, and the elderly or sick loved one they are caring for. The bill allows municipalities to opt out of this provision as well.

I am happy to say all three of these bills had bipartisan support, and I am thrilled that we were able to work across the aisle with the Senate and Governor Dayton to enact these common-sense reforms.

Bills Passed by the House

HF2512
This provision allows pharmacists to issue up to a 90-day supply of certain prescriptions once an individual completes an initial 30-day supply. This helps people plan ahead when going on vacation, and would save time for both patients and doctors alike. HF2512 passed both the House and Senate unanimously, and now awaits the Governor’s signature. Thank you to everyone who has contacted my office to share your thoughts or ask questions. I am very optimistic about the legislation we will be debating on the House floor this week, and will keep you in the loop as we wrap up this session.
Sincerely,

Roz
