After passing three of our big supplemental budget bills last week, we're continuing to hear and approve some great legislation. Before you enjoy the weekend, here’s a quick update from St. Paul.
Medal of Honor Curriculum
We passed a bipartisan bill, HF3167, to teach more students about the Congressional Medal of Honor. If schools provide character development education, this bill encourages that lessons be added to teach about the Medal of Honor’s history and values. This is a great way to help students learn more about real-life heroes.
Radon Testing
This week, we also passed a provision bringing common sense to radon testing. The bill, HF3944, reduces government regulations that prevent people from getting testing because it is too cost-prohibitive. This is a good bill, and it passed with unanimous support.
Increased DWI Penalty
Another bipartisan bill, HF71, was also approved without a dissenting vote. This legislation increases the penalty on drivers guilty of vehicular homicide involving impairment if the person had another DWI in the last 10 years. It’s an important bill to increase safety on our roads.
REAL ID
The legislation to make Minnesota compliant with the federal REAL Act is moving in the legislative process. We need to make these changes so we can start to issue these licenses. The current deadline of 2018 looks far away, but it’s important to solve this problem now so we can continue to use our regular ID to board commercial airplanes even after that date.
Happy Mother’s Day
To all the moms, happy Mother’s Day on Sunday! I’m fortunate to have an amazing mom who actually came to visit me in St. Paul this week. This weekend, take a second to express your thanks and appreciation to any mother in your life.
