Saint Paul, MINN— On Thursday, April 14, 2016, the Minnesota House passed bipartisan legislation authored by Representative Dan Fabian (R-Roseau) on a vote of 129-1. The bill creates a new vehicle category of autocycles which have three wheels like the Polaris Slingshot, requiring a Minnesota driver's license to operate them instead of a motorcycle license. Autocycles will continue to be categorized with motorcycles for insurance and registration purposes.

Currently, if a person purchases an autocycle but does not previously have a motorcycle license, their three-wheeled vehicle cannot be accommodated on any Department of Motor Vehicles motorcycle test course.

"This common sense change to state law means that if folks purchase an autocycle, their regular driver's license will be sufficient to operate their vehicle in Minnesota," said Rep. Fabian. "I am pleased the legislation garnered such strong bipartisan support, and I am hopeful Governor Dayton will sign this bill into law this year."

The legislation is awaiting final action in the Minnesota State Senate.
