Dear Neighbors,
We’re around the halfway point of the legislative session, and we continue to make strides. In the remaining few weeks, it’s critical to share your opinion with me on any issue we’re discussing in St. Paul. I’ve enjoyed hearing your viewpoint, and hope you’ll continue your correspondence.
Student Discipline Bill
My bill, HF3313, establishes a working group to examine ways to improve student discipline procedures in our schools. By involving parents, teachers, administrators, and other experts in this discussion, we can find ways to create safer and more productive learning environments in local classrooms. The bill passed out of committee this week, and I hope to see it signed into law later this year.
There are a few student discipline bills on extreme sides of this issue. I’m proud to author a bill that finds a middle ground and searches for the best way to assist students and schools. Just yesterday, the Star Tribune editorial board backed my proposal as a first step to address discipline issues. If you missed it, you can read their view here.
National Championship Visit
On Thursday, the University of Minnesota women’s hockey team visited the House chambers to be honored for their recent national championship victory. This is the team’s second straight title and fourth in the last five seasons. The Gophers are a true college sports dynasty, and make me proud to be a U of M alum!
St. Paul Visits
Along with my committee hearings and floor sessions, I enjoyed spending time with residents from our area to discuss a variety of issues. Earlier this week, I was fortunate to chat with Madison Wedan, an Augsburg student and Savage native.
If you’re coming to St. Paul in the next couple weeks, please let me know and we can schedule a time to meet in my office. I can’t wait to hear from you!
Have a great weekend,
Drew
