News and a Happy Easter from Rep. Roz Peterson 3-24-2016

Thursday, March 24, 2016

Dear Friends,

As we head towards the Easter holiday, I’d like to give you a quick update on an issue we are currently working on.

REAL ID

We have been discussing the best approach to REAL ID since the start of session, and I get a lot of questions regarding where we are in that process.

The first step toward implementing REAL ID is lifting a ban preventing the Department of Public Safety from implementing changes; this ban was imposed by the legislature with bipartisan support back in 2009. Once we do that, the Department of Public Safety can begin to conduct studies and report back to the legislature regarding the cost and logistics of switching to REAL IDs. We plan on passing this initial step in the very near future.

We are still negotiating what the best legislative track is to enact the actual changes. Data privacy is at the forefront of all of our minds here in the House. I am confident we can find the most responsible solution for REAL ID, keeping private data secure and getting people their new IDs with as little inconvenience as possible.

MN Realtors Association Visit

I had the pleasure of visiting with several groups from our district this last week, including constituents with the MN Realtors Association Day on the Hill. It was a pleasure discussing their professional experiences and what they believe should be priorities here at the legislature.

Minnesota Fire Service Day on the Hill

I also had the honor of visiting with fire fighters from our district as part of Minnesota Fire Service Day on the Hill. These gentlemen and women do so much to keep our communities safe, and prevent tragedy. We discussed different approaches to legislation that would make our homes more safe, and I truly appreciated the insight these gentleman provided!

Happy Easter!

I’d like to wish everyone a relaxing holiday weekend filled with friends, family, and great memories. I’m excited to celebrate Easter with my family, and look forward to the start of spring. If we can avoid more snow, that is!

Thank you for the privilege of being your representative. Let me know if you have any questions or concerns as we continue with session!

Sincerely,

Roz
