Legislative Update - May 15, 2018

Tuesday, May 15, 2018

Dear Neighbors,

We are in the final days of session with a lot to accomplish. I will be working hard to bring the session to a successful close.

I am proud of my work establishing and maintaining a stable state budget that is built on fair taxes and invests in the future for all Minnesotans. These will be my guideposts as I review the tax bill that is moving forward.  We absolutely need to address conformity with the changes in the federal tax code.  But we need to do that in a way that maintains a stable budget going forward and gives fairer taxes for low-income working Minnesotans and their families.

The bonding bill passed in the House on Monday. I was glad to see the inclusion of the MSU, Mankato Clinical Sciences building and the rebuilding of the kitchen that serves the St. Peter Regional Treatment Center. However, The House proposal missed an opportunity to rebuild our infrastructure and provide many more good paying construction jobs across Minnesota by not including more projects. Particularly disturbing was the lack of funding for critically needed repairs at South Central College in North Mankato, MSOP in St. Peter and funding for the Mankato levee project on Highway 169. I’ll keep working to expand the size of the bonding bill and fund these important projects in our region.

Thanks to all of you who have contacted me about issues that are important to you.  Your input is valuable and there is still time for you to be heard as the session comes to a close. If you would like to also contact the Governor’s office you may do so by clicking here.

Sincerely,

Clark Johnson

State Representative
