Dear Neighbors,
We have just over one week left in the legislative session and there’s still work to finish on the tax conformity and omnibus finance bills which are in conference committee. We must also hear and vote on a public infrastructure bill. Here’s the latest news from the Capitol:
Bonding Bill
A public infrastructure bill funds much-needed improvements and repairs in projects across the state, bringing good-paying jobs and greater economic opportunity to our communities. It’s also the best way to fund long-term projects, ensuring we get the best value for our money.
We have so many shovel-ready projects around the state. I support a bonding bill closer in size to Gov. Dayton’s proposal and I will continue to advocate for additional funding.
REAL ID
The Department of Homeland Security informed us that Minnesota will be deemed compliant with the federal REAL ID law as long as we’re capable of taking applications for REAL ID by October 1, 2018. We are currently on track to meet that target.
REAL ID-compliant cards will not be mandatory until October 2020, so Minnesotans will still be able to use current licenses and ID cards for domestic air travel or to enter military bases and federal buildings until that date.
Elder Abuse
I’m still very concerned about the lack of action in the legislature to address elder abuse this session. I encourage you to reach out to Speaker Kurt Daudt and Sen. Paul Gazelka to tell them something must be done to address this serious issue.
Several groups who represent seniors took out a full page ad in the Star Tribune to bring attention to the inaction.
Teacher Appreciation and Emergency Funding
It’s Teacher Appreciation Week so I want to extend my thanks to the teachers across our district and around our state who dedicate their lives to preparing our children to succeed. They deserve the resources needed to continue doing their excellent work for our kids now and in the future.
That’s why I support Gov. Dayton’s emergency school aid proposal. Dozens of districts in the state face budget deficits and potential cuts; some still face these deficits as a result of cuts made by the previous administration. The Governor’s plan would provide $138 million to school districts around the state, including millions of dollars to our area schools. Every Minnesotan deserves a world-class education and I’m proud to support it.
