Legislative Update - May 10, 2018

Thursday, May 10, 2018

Dear Neighbors,

There is a little over one week left in session and the tax conformity and omnibus finance bills are in conference committee before coming back to the floor for votes next week. Here are the latest updates from the Capitol:

Bonding Bill

The public infrastructure bill funds much-needed improvements, repairs, and investments in projects across the state, bringing jobs and economic opportunity to our communities. It’s also the best way to fund long-term projects to ensure Minnesotans get the best bang for their buck.

There is plenty of need, with three project requests for every project funded. I’ve been working to get projects in our community funded and I’m pleased to see funding included for the MSU-Mankato Clinical Sciences Building.

Due to the number of shovel-ready projects around the state that could put people to work immediately, I support a bonding bill closer in size to Gov. Dayton’s proposal and will continue to push for additional funding.

REAL ID

This week, the state received word from the Department of Homeland Security that Minnesota will be deemed compliant with the federal REAL ID law as long as we’re capable of taking applications for REAL ID by October 1, 2018. We are on track to meet that target.

REAL ID-compliant cards will not be mandatory until October 2020, so Minnesotans can still use current licenses and ID cards for domestic air travel or to enter military installations and federal buildings until that date.

Teacher Appreciation

It’s Teacher Appreciation Week so I want to extend my thanks to the teachers across our district and around our state who dedicate their lives to preparing our children for success. I’m committed to securing the resources they need to continue doing their excellent work for our kids now and in the future.

Visits

I had a chance to speak with members of the Blue Earth County Drug Court Team and its coordinator, Kevin Mettler. This is a great program with top-notch individuals working every day to make it even better. Thanks for speaking with me.
