Legislative Update- April 23, 2018

Monday, April 23, 2018

Dear Neighbors,

It’s been busy at the Capitol as we just completed our third and final committee deadline for bills to pass. Last Friday, large omnibus bills had to be discussed, voted on and passed out of their respective committees.

House Majority Budget Shortchanges Education

Last week, the House Majority announced their supplemental budget blueprint, or funding ‘targets’ for Minnesota. Due to responsible, honest budgeting in 2013 and 2014, and a growing economy, we consistently have had surpluses. We as lawmakers have had the opportunity to find ways to help Minnesotans get ahead. How budgets are developed reflects values. How decisions are made can have positive or negative long-term effects and it is essential to contemplate each and every piece of legislation. I was disappointed after seeing the funding targets to learn that expanding quality early childhood and K-12 education is not a high priority of the House Majority. We can and ought to do better.

I am proud of our community’s strong schools and commitment to our youngest learners. I chief authoredlegislation to make voluntary pre-k funding permanent for over 4,000 students statewide, including in three school districts I represent. Our progress should not be jeopardized to fund tax cuts for corporations or the ultra-wealthy. Investing in our young learners helps students’ success and save money in the long run.

I’ve heard from you and will continue to ensure our community values are a priority at the Capitol.

Minnesotans Continue to Demand Gun Violence Prevention Measures

This past week it was an honor to speak at the Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America rally. The rally helped to demonstrate the momentum and strong support for the enactment of common sense gun laws in Minnesota. In fact, a recent poll shows that 89% of gun owners favor background checks for all gun purchases.

I’ll keep advocating for common sense gun safety measures to make our families and communities safer.
