Legislative Update - April 19, 2018

Thursday, April 19, 2018

Neighbors,

First, one update for those interested in the Minneapolis public schools: last evening in the House education finance bill, we were able to secure the possibility of releasing several million dollars to help close the $33 million budget shortfall the Minneapolis public school district is facing. Rep Jim Davnie and others are working hard to make sure that this funding remains available when the session wraps up in mid-May.

As some of you may have heard, on Tuesday Gov. Dayton announced that he was appointing me to the Minnesota Supreme Court. I am very excited about the chance to continue to serve Minnesotans. I am resigning from the legislature tomorrow, Friday April 20.

Because we are so close to the end of session, Gov. Dayton will not (in accordance with our law) call a special election for my seat. We will elect a new State Representative in the November general election. In the meantime, you continue to be well served by our great Senator Scott Dibble. In addition, if there are specific constituent or other issues before the House of Representatives that need attention, you can contact our neighboring (and also great) legislator, Rep. Frank Hornstein.

It has been an amazing and humbling sixteen years serving you and Minnesota in the House of Representatives. Thank you!

Sincerely,

Paul
