Legislative Update- April 5, 2018

Thursday, April 5, 2018

Dear Neighbors,

I hope you and your family had an enjoyable Easter or Passover celebration. Although we are still on our holiday break, I wanted to take a moment to share some useful and timely information with you.

Severe Weather Awareness Week

This year’s Severe Weather Awareness Week in Minnesota is April 9-13. Below are great tools and opportunities for you and your family to practice your severe weather emergency response plan.

Each day of next week will focus on a different severe weather:

Making Plans for ‘Up North’

Although it seems the spring snow will be sticking around a little longer, summer is right around the corner. If you’re making plans to head up to the cabin, or explore our beautiful North Shore, the Minnesota Department of Transportation has outlined various road construction projects and their timelines on Highway 35N that you can find here.

For a comprehensive list of all construction projects across the state, you can visit MNDOT’s current construction page.

Attention Small Businesses! Get 50% Cash Back on STEM Intern Wages with SciTechsperience

SciTechsperience is a free state-funded internship program that provides small, for-profit Minnesota employers with a 50% wage match – worth up to $2,500 – on wages for STEM college interns. The program connects small companies to more than 1,000 prescreened STEM students statewide. Employers make the hiring decisions and may also refer students to the program. There are no fees with SciTechsperience – it’s simply a great statewide resource to help employers and college students connect on STEM internships. Funding for SciTechsperience is provided by the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development, and the program is administered by the Minnesota High Tech Association (MHTA). At least 300 matches are available in 2018. Learn more and apply atSciTechMN.org, or reach out to SciTechMN@mhta.org.

Advocacy Groups Visit Capitol

Every year, the ‘People’s House’ is filled with Minnesotans from every corner of the state, advocating for change that impacts them personally or professionally. “Days the Capitol”, which are sponsored by various advocacy groups such as Minnesota nurses, businesses, or teachers, for example, occur almost on a daily basis up until adjournment. Most of these days typically include a group gathering at either the State Office Building or the Capitol, and then meetings with each member’s state senator and representative.

I’ve been fortunate to meet with a wide variety of groups this session ranging from students, to public works employees and early education teachers to name a few. Our community is highly engaged and I am so grateful to have the tremendous experience to represent you and elevate your voice at the Capitol.
