Update: Town Hall, Gun safety measures tabled, visitors, supplemental budget

Monday, March 26, 2018

Neighbors and Friends,

The first legislative committee deadline has passed and the second deadline is this Thursday. Bills that have already been heard in one body, must be heard in the other to survive the second deadline and move along the legislative process. Here is an update from the Capitol.

Town Hall Meeting

Thank you to all who attended our Town Hall meeting on Saturday. I enjoyed discussing relevant issues with engaged citizens in our district. Sen. Marty, Rep. Lesch and I always look forward to these substantive meetings.

Gun Violence Prevention Measures Halted

Rep. Dave Pinto attempted to move his bills for criminal background checks and “extreme risk protection orders” out of committee so they could continue through the process. He was unsuccessful. A bipartisan bill was also introduced in the Senate, but the Senate leadership said they have no intention of moving forward on the bill. Visitors to the Capitol Last Week

We had another busy week of visitors coming to the Capitol to meet with legislators about their interest and concerns.

I met with members of Association of Federal, State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) last week.

An engaged group visited my office on Muslim Day at the Capitol.

Visitors from across the river stopped by to discuss their bonding requests.

It was my first opportunity to meet with the new Minneapolis mayor, Jacob Frey.

Supplemental Budget

Recently, Governor Dayton released his supplemental budget plan for a better Minnesota. His budget focuses on increasing tax fairness for individuals, continuing investments in Minnesota’s youngest learners, expanding access to affordable health care, leaving a fair and balanced state budget, and improving incomes and economic opportunities for all Minnesotans.

As the legislative process continues, we are creating our own version of a supplemental budget. In the end, a budget is a reflection of our priorities. My top priority is to ensure every Minnesotan gets the opportunity to succeed by continuing to invest in the things that make life better for all of us

As always, contact me with any issues or concerns.

Sincerely,

Alice
