Legislative Update - March 16, 2018

Friday, March 16, 2018

Dear Neighbors,

The pace at the Capitol continues to quicken and I expect one of the main topics in the coming days to be tax conformity and budget adjustments. Here are some updates from the last week at the Capitol:

Dayton’s Final State of the State

House Image

On Wednesday night, Governor Dayton gave his final State of the State address. Since he came into office in 2010, unemployment in Minnesota is at its lowest rate in 17 years. We’ve gone from a $6.2 billion deficit and no reserves to a modest surplus and $1.9 billion in a rainy day fund to protect against future downturns, contributing to our high ratings from national outlets.

Also, nearly $2 billion has been invested in E-12 education across the state, and we recently hit a record high 82.7 percent high school graduation rate. Thank you to Gov. Dayton for his leadership and his sincere concern for the people of Minnesota.

Veterans Day on the Hill

On Monday, veterans and advocates visited the Capitol for Veterans Day on the Hill. I met with some veterans regarding housing and closing the gap for homelessness among veterans. It was wonderful to see so many people advocating for and committed to such a worthy cause.

Supplemental Budget Proposal

Today, Gov. Dayton released his supplemental budget proposal. He includes a variety of measures in it, including money for school safety, funding to tackle elder abuse, and a mechanism for fixing MNLARS.

In the days and weeks ahead, both the House and Senate will be offering their budget proposals. I hope we can leave the rhetoric at the door and focus on what serves Minnesotans.

If you have any input or concerns, please feel free to reach out to me at the Capitol.

Sincerely,

Sandra Masin

State Representative
