Legislative Update - March 7, 2018

Wednesday, March 7, 2018

Dear Neighbors,

I hope you all stayed safe during the snowstorm this week. A special thanks to the public employees who have kept our roads plowed and our communities safe throughout the winter. I’ve been meeting with constituents and advocates to discuss the issues affecting them at their kitchen table and in their workplaces.

To all those who have already reached out, I appreciate your input. I hope to hear from many more of you as session moves forward.

Gun Bill Recap

Last week, we had two common sense gun safety bills in the Public Safety Committee. The first would require criminal background checks for firearm transfers – a measure supported by the vast majority of the American public. The second would allow family members and law enforcement to petition for firearms to be prohibited from people who pose a danger to themselves or others.

These are smart, reasonable steps to take to increase gun safety and protect the rights of law abiding gun owners in the process. Predictably, the Republicans stalled the bill and continued to play politics instead of taking responsible action to save lives.

My Bill to Ban Bump Stocks

I’m also pushing for one of my bills to have a hearing. It would ban bump stocks, like the one used in the Las Vegas shooting that cost 58 American lives. Even the NRA has signaled they’re open to regulating this type of trigger activator.

On Wednesday, Gov. Dayton announced his support of this type of legislation to clarify bump stocks as an illegal modification. I spoke to the chair of the Public Safety Committee about getting my bill a hearing, but was told he believes it’s unnecessary. I disagree and will continue to promote this common sense legislation.

As always, feel free to reach out with your ideas and input during session.

Sincerely,

Jack Considine

State Representative
