Legislative Update - March 2, 2018

Friday, March 2, 2018

Dear Neighbors,

It is very busy at the Capitol right now. Yesterday we had our first hearings on gun violence prevention, but unfortunately the House Majority stopped legislation from moving forward. Two policies were considered. The first would allow law enforcement officers or family members to petition a court to prohibit people from possessing firearms if they pose a significant danger to themselves or others. The second would require criminal background checks on all gun sales.

It is very disappointing these policies were blocked especially with news reports of another school shooting, this time at Central Michigan University. I am going to continue to push for common sense legislation that will reduce gun violence. Here is some other news that you may have missed and some photos from meetings and visitors at the Capitol.

Childhood Hunger Caucus
Last week I announced a bi-partisan Child Hunger Caucus with other policymakers. One in six children doesn’t know if they will have enough to eat. Child hunger is our most solvable problem and it is really important to get people in the room together to tackle this issue. You can read more about it here.

National School Breakfast Week
We all know that every child deserves the opportunity for a quality education. School breakfast programs improve student experiences at school and the overall success of students who participate. Next week, March 5th – 9th the School Nutrition Association is encouraging parents, students, and school officials to come together and enjoy school breakfast. I will be visiting 6 different schools next week to celebrate their school breakfast program with teachers and students. It is really exciting to see so many students start their day with a healthy meal that gets them ready to learn.

Coffee and Conversation
My next Coffee and Conversations will be March 10th, at 10:30 AM at the Dunn Brothers in Apple Valley (15265 Galaxie Ave, Apple Valley, MN 55124). I have a previously scheduled event this Saturday, but I’ll be back to my normal schedule starting March 10th.

Thank you to some of Apple Valley's brave firefighters for stopping by the Capitol!

Beth and Mallory visited me at the Capitol on Thursday to talk about gun violence prevention.

Warmly,
Erin
