RELEASE: Rep. Rena Moran and Rep. Ilhan Omar Renew Year-Old Requests for ERA and Gender Equality Committee Hearings

Thursday, March 8, 2018

SAINT PAUL, MN – Today, with hundreds of Minnesotans gathered at the State Capitol to demand the passage of the Equal Rights Amendment, State Rep. Rena Moran (DFL- St. Paul) and State Rep. Ilhan Omar (DFL- Minneapolis) sent a letter to the Republican chairs of the House Civil Law and Data Practices Policy Committee and the House Government Operations and Elections Policy Committee to renew their request for hearings on two bills.

HF 356, authored by Rep. Moran, is a resolution memorializing Congress to remove the deadline for ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment by the states.

HF 189, authored by Rep. Omar, is a proposed amendment question for Minnesota voters to add gender equality under the law to the Minnesota Constitution.

The respective Republican-controlled committees have had possession of the two bills for over a year, and the chairs have not responded to hearing requests on the two measures.

Rep. Moran and Rep. Omar stated in their letter, “Gender equality under both US and Minnesota Constitutions continues to be timely, and a number of other nations have achieved constitutional gender equality already. It would also be timely to hold a hearing on both HF 356 and HF 189, now that they have been in the possession of your respective committees for over a year.”
