Legislative Update - February 23, 2018

Friday, February 23, 2018

Dear Neighbors,

The legislative session started this week and our to-do list is growing by the minute. Hearing about your concerns and what would help your family is critical to how I work to shape policies at the Capitol. My biggest concern is that our community not only succeeds, but thrives. That is why I am always fighting so every student has access to quality education, people can find jobs that provide fair pay, and seniors have a secure retirement. But I’d appreciate hearing from you, please send me an email or call and let me know what is important to you. I am here to listen and represent you.

Focus (Again) on Gun Violence

My heart aches for the growing number of families who have been shattered by gun violence. The mass shootings seem to happen more often and every hit a little closer to home. Americans are killed by guns at rates higher than almost any other country not at war. We need to do something. I am supporting common-sense bills for criminal background checks and gun violence protective orders – I am hopeful we will see some progress, but it will only happen if people within our communities continue to speak up. I will continue to push to make our families and communities safer.

Here are from the Protect Minnesota rally at the Capitol to urge policymakers to do something to reduce gun violence. I share their values.

Tips for Winter

While we are still in the middle of winter the Minnesota Department of Commerce sent out some useful tips for staying safe in your home from carbon monoxide and heating hazards. Click here to read and find out more.

I also want to highlight Minnesota’s energy assistance program. Many Minnesotans are still struggling to pay their winter heating bills. If you or someone you know may benefit from this program, call the Commerce Department toll-free at 800-657-3710 or visit the Energy Assistance Program section of the Commerce website (mn.gov/commerce).

Assistance is available for homeowners or renters who earn less than 50 percent of the state’s median annual income (for example $48,077 for a family of four).

Please let me know if you have any questions.
