Legislative Update - December 8, 2017

Friday, December 8, 2017

Dear neighbors,

There certainly has been a lot in the news lately, but I wanted to share with you a few news items from the Capitol.

State Economists Warn Lawmakers about Budget Deficit

State economists released their updated budget forecast and it isn’t great news. We will be facing over a $300 million deficit once the full budget is passed.

The entire time I’ve been your legislator I’ve worked towards a stable budget that makes long-term investments which build a stronger future for all Minnesotans.

Going into the 2017 session, our state had a $1.6 billion budget surplus. But in less than a year our surplus has turned into a deficit because of tax cuts for big corporations, big tobacco and the super-rich.

What do you value?

As your representative I’m continuously working to improve life for your family and our community. That’s why it is so important to me to listen to your needs and learn about what you value most. When you have time please take this opportunity to fill out a brief, four question survey. I’ve received a great response from our area and I wanted to be sure I heard from you too.

Open Enrollment

It’s also the time of the year when open enrollment is available for those accessing health insurance on the individual market. The open enrollment period runs until January 14, but if you want to ensure coverage on January 1, the deadline to enroll is December 20.

Over 100,000 Minnesotans have applied for coverage through MNsure.org, the one-stop-shop to compare prices, find out if you qualify for tax credits, and sign up for coverage.

If you have questions or problems, my office can provide assistance so don’t hesitate to call and more importantly don’t hastate to get coverage.

Cold Weather Rule

Now that we are in the heart of winter, I wanted to remind you about Minnesota’s shut off protection rules. For those Minnesotans under certain income levels, help may be available for payment of energy bills, help with utility disconnections or fuel deliveries, and advocacy with power companies and human service providers. For more information, including eligibility and how to apply, please visit the Minnesota Department of Commerce’s website here

On October 15, the Minnesota Cold Weather Rule also went into effect which protects residential utility customers from having their heat shut off during the winter months. Certain low-income consumers aren’t required to pay more than 10 percent of their household income toward current and past heating bills, while others are eligible to arrange a Cold Weather Rule payment plan. More information is available from the Public Utilities Commission here.

As always, please don’t hesitate to contact me with any issues or concerns you may have.

Sincerely,

Clark Johnson

State Representative
