On Wednesday, Minnesota Management and Budget announced a forecasted budget surplus of $329 million. The state budget forecast reflects current law, and is based on the most recent information about the national and state economic outlook. What this estimate does not include is the rate of inflation in future years.
While Minnesota’s budget remains relatively stable, federal uncertainty threatens the economic outlook for our state and Minnesota families. It’s important to exercise caution; that’s why I have been pushing for legislation that would include the rate of inflation in these economic forecasts. The goal of my bill would be to give more accurate numbers, helping us enact wise budgeting and smart investments for the future.
Bloomington Federation of Teachers Visit
On Wednesday, educators from the Bloomington Federation of Teachers came to visit with Reps. Slocum, Carlson and myself. We discussed a variety of issues, including school safety, the need for decreasing classroom sizes and additional support staff in schools, such as counselors and school social workers. It was clear to all of us how deeply these teachers care about their students and their success for the future.
HF 2339 Receives a Hearing
Yesterday, a bipartisan bill of mine was heard in the Taxes Committee. The legislation would deliver a nonrefundable tax credit for people making charitable contributions to endowment funds of qualifying Minnesota community foundations. Community foundations help ensure that these funds stay local and remain within the specific community that foundation supports. Another purpose for this credit is to take advantage of the generational transfer of wealth that is happening in communities around the state. The bill is being considered for a final House tax bill.
Gun Violence Prevention Bills Halted in House
Throughout my time at the Legislature, frustration with the national gun violence epidemic is one of the main issues I hear about from those in our community.
In the wake of yet another mass shooting, this time at a school in Parkland, FL, Minnesotans have joined a nationwide movement to end senseless gun violence. Last week we saw rallies at the Capitol, press conferences, and requests for House Republicans to hold committee hearings on bills to prevent gun violence. By way of procedural motion filed by my colleague Rep. Dave Pinto, two bills specifically addressing gun violence were heard after sitting on the Republican Leadership’s desk for over a year. After hearing testimony and brief discussion, both bills were ‘tabled’ in the Public Safety Committee.
Minnesotans deserve meaningful action to keep our state safe. I’ve heard from you and I’m committed to delivering that for our community this session.
