To The Editor –
When President George Bush announced his proposed escalation of the war in Iraq, I sent him a letter expressing my strong displeasure with his decision. At the time, I wrote that "course you have chosen mirrors the mistakes of the past and will not solve the problem." In the weeks since I sent that letter, it has become increasingly clear that the vast majority of Minnesotans agree with me. The President meanwhile, despite promises that he would listen to members of Congress and the public, has dug his heels in and continued to pursue an agenda of escalation.
I have, therefore, decided to cosponsor H.F. 674, A Resolution Opposing Escalation of United States Troops in Iraq. Normally, I would believe that foreign affairs falls far outside the jurisdiction of the Minnesota House. Given the tragic consequences of the President's proposal, however, as well as the strong opposition expressed to me by my constituents, I have decided that we must do everything in our power to send a message to President Bush.
It is my strong hope that President Bush will see the light and end his tragic war. Absent that, I hope that the Congress passes legislation that forces him to do so. In the interim, I will continue to do whatever I can to register the strong feelings of my constituents with the powers that be in Washington, D.C.
Rep. Erin Murphy
