Legislative Update - January 16, 2018

Tuesday, January 16, 2018

Dear Neighbors,

I’d like to wish everyone a Happy New Year, and I hope all of you had a wonderful holiday season full of quality time with your friends and family. I also hope you’re all successfully braving the cold weather which has accompanied the arrival of 2018. Here is an update from the State Capitol.

Coffee and Conversations

With 2018 now upon us, it’s time to look ahead to the next legislative session which starts February 20. I’m committed to listening to your input regarding the important issues we will be considering at the State Capitol, and I’m again hosting a series of Coffee and Conversations. I’d like to invite you to the first of these this year, taking place this coming Saturday, January 20 at 10:30 a.m. We’ll meet at Dunn Bros. Coffee,15265 Galaxie Ave, in Apple Valley. Everyone is welcome, and I hope to see you there.

Minnesota is Best Run State in U.S.A.; Second Best State To Raise a Family

Good news recently came when USA Today named Minnesota the “Best Run State in the Nation.” In 2012, Minnesota ranked 10th and has consistently risen in this ranking since. Reasons given for the honor include Minnesota’s “strong fiscal management, low unemployment and poverty rates, above-average median household income, and strong credit rating.”

Additionally, WalletHub ranked the best and worst states to raise a family, and Minnesota was ranked second best in the country. In this study, Minnesota scored well in a variety of areas including health and safety, education and child care, and socioeconomics.

While we have considerable work before us to further expand opportunities for all Minnesota families, including guaranteed paid family leave, these distinctions are something we can be proud of. It also highlights the need to continue budgeting responsibly, while investing in the things we value, like great schools and quality health care.

Advocacy Fair

It has been one year since almost 100,000 Minnesotans gathered for the Women’s March in St. Paul. I still hear from many of you who are looking for ways to get more involved and influence positive policy changes. On the one year anniversary of the march, several of my colleagues have put together an Advocacy Fair to connect Minnesotans with over 25 organizations that could use your time and efforts. The event is being held this coming Sunday, January 21 from 2:00 – 5:00 p.m. at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church (700 Snelling Ave S, Saint Paul). It’s free to attend, but please consider bringing a non-perishable food item for Neighborhood House.

For more information, click here to see a flyer, and click here to see the Facebook event page.

Please don’t hesitate to contact me with any feedback or ideas you may have. It’s an honor to represent you.
