Legislative Update - November 9, 2017

Dear Neighbors,

Each November 11, we observe the sacrifices made by members of our military with the commemoration of Veterans Day, and this year is no exception. They leave their families behind to head into uncertain, often dangerous situations to defend our freedoms and keep us safe here at home. Their families must also grapple with this uncertainty. These brave men and women volunteer out of a spirit of service and commitment to country.

As we thank the men and women who have served, we must recognize the challenges that many veterans face upon returning home. Whether regarding housing, employment, or health care, there are often roadblocks in the way of returning to normality. There are resources available for them from several different organizations:

Minnesota National Guard – Beyond the Yellow Ribbon

Minnesota Assistance Council For Veterans

Homeless Veteran Prevention and Assistance

Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs

Stay warm this winter

As the weather turns colder, the Minnesota Department of Commerce reminds us that energy assistance is available for those who may struggle paying their heating bills. No veteran who has sacrificed so much should be left in the cold. For more information, visit Commerce’s website here.

Throughout the state, there are events in observance of Veterans Day. Take a look at the list from the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs here, to attend an event near you.

No matter the level of gratitude we give these brave Americans, it will never be enough. It’s important, though, to find ways we can give back to those who have sacrificed so much. Please join me to reflect and recognize the sacrifices made by members of our armed forces. Together, let’s commit to open doors and create opportunities for them not just on Veterans Day, but every day.

What do you value?

As your representative, it is my job to listen to you and learn what would improve life for your family and our community. Recently, legislators have crossed the state, listened to Minnesotans and facilitated a dialogue about our shared values and future. The conversations have been challenging and thoughtful. People from all walks of life have attended and shared so much about themselves and their communities.

If you’d like to share what you value and how to move forward to achieve those goals, please take this opportunity to fill out a brief, four question survey.

Sincerely,

Mike Freiberg
