Legislative Update - November 21, 2017

Tuesday, November 21, 2017

Dear neighbors,

Earlier this month we celebrated Veterans Day, saluting the brave men and women of our armed forces for their sacrifices on our behalf. I was honored to have been invited to share a few words at the annual ceremony at the DECC discussing steps we can all take to create opportunities for veterans when they return home.

No matter the level of thanks we give them, it will never be enough, but we should all look to ways we can make life easier for those who have contributed so much. Upon returning home, some veterans face unique challenges including finding a place to live, stable employment, education and job training, and health care. As a community, let’s commit to find solutions removing these obstacles.

On October 2Insight Counseling Duluth opened. Last week I had the opportunity to tour the practice, which provides group mental health services. Insight provides a warm, welcoming space in the Alworth building. I wish them success as they provide an important service for our community.

Last week I also got to visit with students attending Lake Superior College as part of a “Know Your Legislators” forum. I was joined by fellow Duluth-area legislators Rep. Jen Schultz, Sen. Erik Simonson, and Rep. Mary Murphy along with Rep. Erin Murphy from St. Paul to listen to concerns from students. Fox 21 covered the meeting, which was hosted by the LSC Student Senate. I hope conversations like this can continue and that the young people in our community know they have a voice that’s worth hearing.

I hope each of you will have a wonderful Thanksgiving. This holiday affords us a time to share a meal and celebrate with family and friends, while reflecting on what’s important to us. If you plan to do any shopping for the holidays after Thanksgiving, I encourage you to do so locally. In Duluth, we have many wonderful small, locally owned businesses that deserve our patronage. Money spent in our local economy is more likely to stay right here longer and gives a boost to the owners and employees.

Happy Thanksgiving.

Sincerely,

Liz Olson
