Rep. Maye Quade Statement on Harassment in the Minnesota House

Thursday, November 9, 2017

ST. PAUL— Representative Erin Maye Quade (DFL-Apple Valley) released the following statement:

“Sexual harassment in the workplace, and at the Capitol, is bigger than one Senator.

“Women are far too familiar with harassment and it must stop.  I am not alone. I am not alone in experiencing harassment at the workplace, and I am not alone in experiencing harassment at the Capitol. As a candidate, I experienced it with Sen. Schoen, as a legislator, I’ve experienced it by multiple members of the majority and reported it.

“That’s why I’m disappointed in Speaker Daudt’s false statements yesterday to Minnesota Public Radio that he had no prior knowledge of misconduct. I know he was specifically informed of the inappropriate behavior that was directed toward me by members of his caucus who hold committee gavels. Though he had the opportunity back in May, I hope he follows DFL Leadership’s lead with swift action.

“I am deeply appreciative of the leadership from Leader Melissa Hortman, Representative Paul Thissen, and Representative Erin Murphy for taking the supportive action that I requested, and Senator Tom Bakk and DFL Senate Leadership for taking this issue seriously. Their actions show their commitment to improving behavior.

“I want to thank those who have supported me while I came forward to report these occurrences of sexual harassment. Numerous people have contacted me with their own stories and I want anyone else to know they are not alone.”
