I’m sure you’ve seen some coverage in the news already, but we're staying busy in St. Paul for the legislative session. There are a couple big issues making their way through the process, and it’s an exciting time to be involved.
This week, a bill was heard in the Senate that would have made “assisted suicide” legal for terminally ill patients in Minnesota. I’ve always been an advocate for pro-life issues, and this is no different. Instead of speeding up the process, we need to care for our loved ones as they near the end of their life. After moving testimony by opponents, the bill’s author pulled the legislation from consideration. I’m thankful this bill was, at least for now, put on hold.
Unemployment Insurance Reform
Yesterday, the House passed a bill to provide relief for out-of-work and eligible workers on the Iron Range. The downturn in this industry has caused a lot of hardship for Minnesota families, and I’m proud to vote for this needed relief.
Another component of this bill reforms the unemployment insurance trust fund for our state’s small businesses. The current language would provide $258 million in relief for main-street businesses throughout Minnesota while also reforming a system that currently has a large surplus.
