Legislative Update (3-18-16)

Friday, March 18, 2016

Dear Neighbors,

On Monday, I had a bill heard before the House Veterans Affairs Division that would fund the final portion of the Rice County Veterans Memorial in Faribault. This is an outstanding project that will be source of pride for the entire community as we thank veterans for the sacrifices they have made for our nation.

I look forward to working on this project with my colleagues and will provide you with updates as the bill makes its way through the legislature.

In other news, the governor released his supplemental budget proposal this week. In total, the governor proposes spending an additional $581 million this year. While I am sure that there are components of the governor’s supplemental budget that are necessary, I am concerned about the inclusion of his 16 cent minimum gas tax increase.

At a time when the state has a $900 million budget surplus and the $2 billion tax increase from 2013 still fresh in folks’ minds, it just doesn’t make sense to ask Minnesotans to pay more in taxes.

Instead of taking more money from hard-working taxpayers, let’s focus on growing Minnesota’s economy and helping families keep more money in their pocketbooks.
As always, please do not hesitate to contact me to share your thoughts regarding the new legislative session. I can be reached by phone at 651-296-8237 or via email rep.brian.daniels@house.mn.

Thank you and have a great weekend,
Brian
