Legislative Update - July 27, 2017

Thursday, July 27, 2017

Dear neighbors,

I hope you’re enjoying the summer and all the wonderful things our community and state have to offer. My family has enjoyed Rose Fest and the Slice of Shoreview, visited family and friends “up north” and taken out our canoe on Lake Josephine for the first time.

Column on Enbridge Line 3

I joined with my fellow Native American Caucus members of the Minnesota House to write a column about the proposed Line 3 pipeline route. You can read the column here at the Star Tribune or on my website.

Local Business Spotlight – Bent Brewstillery

I recently participated in a tour of Bent Brewstillery, a locally-owned small business located at 1744 Terrace Drive in Roseville. Bent offers truly unique varieties of craft beer and spirits. Owner and Head Distiller Bartley Blume’s creativity and enthusiasm for high quality products and local collaboration are impressive. You can visit the Bent Taproom and check it out for yourself!

New Laws Effective August 1st

Many laws will go into effect on August 1st, including increasing efforts to end HIV/AIDS; limiting life insurance payouts to beneficiaries of suspected terrorists; adding more areas for county-funded veteran memorial construction; increasing penalties for impersonating peace officers and those in the armed services and raising fines for those who fail to stop for school bus stop-arms.

A detailed list of some of the notable laws going into effect on August 1, 2017 can be found here.

Never Leave a Child in a Car

Last year 39 children in the U.S. died of heatstroke from being left in cars. The inside of a parked car can quickly exceed 120 degrees and that can be lethal, especially because children’s bodies heat up three to five times more quickly than adults.

These deaths and near-misses are avoidable. Please join me in raising awareness about preventing heatstroke. More information can be found here.

Get out and Enjoy Summer and Family Fun

It’s almost time for Canadian Days in Little Canada! Schedule of events is here. The fun starts August 4th!

Mark your calendar for Vadnais Heights Heritage Days, August 17-20. Schedule of events here.

Don’t forget the wonderful activities at Como Park Zoo and Conservatory. They have a summer flower show going on and daily activities for kids, including feeding animals. Check out the Zoo and Conservatory’s calendar of events.

This summer the DNR is partnering with groups across the state to teach children and adults how to fish and protect our aquatic habitat. Find more information about “MinnAqua” and what state parks they’ll be teaching people to fish at.

Here is information about Roseville's Discover Your Parks, every Wednesday evening a different park hosts an event that includes free bounce house, games, crafts, popcorn, ice cream and puppet show.

There’s only a few more weeks for free concerts through Shoreview's Concert in the Commons series and Roseville's Live @ the Rog series in Central Park.

Fridays with Firefighters continues every other Friday in Roseville. Meet firefighters, have an ice pop, and try out the fire hose! You have until the end of August to join this fun activity.

I look forward to hearing from you throughout the summer. Don’t hesitate to contact me with any questions, concerns and suggestions for future community events to include on our list!

Jamie
