Legislative Update (Feb. 29, 2016)

Monday, February 29, 2016

Neighbors,

Budget Forecast

On Friday, Minnesota Management and Budget released their projected forecast of $900 million for our state. This is somewhat lower than November’s $1.2 billion prediction, but still allows the Legislature room to assist Minnesotans this session.

Although the new forecast isn’t as robust as it was in November, our goals haven’t changed. The extra tax revenue means we can fund roads and bridges throughout our state without raising taxes on you and your family. There’s no need to consider a gas tax hike when our state faces a large surplus.

Along with road and bridge funding, we have an opportunity to provide overdue tax relief for Minnesota families. Farmers, senior citizens, small business owners, and military veterans would benefit from our 2015 tax plan. During the upcoming session, I’ll advocate to provide tax relief to middle-class Minnesotans.

Property Tax Town Hall

Last week, I hosted a town hall meeting with Rep. Steve Drazkowski to discuss property tax issues in our area. It was a great discussion, and I enjoyed learning about ways I can help you in St. Paul. I hope we can work together to pass a tax relief bill this session.

Caucus Reminder

Tomorrow, March 1, Minnesota hosts our local precinct caucuses starting at 7:00 p.m. No matter which party you identify with, this is a great opportunity to have your voice heard. For more information on where you can caucus, please visit http://caucusfinder.sos.state.mn.us/.
