Dear Neighbors,
Ramadan Mubarak!
Governor Dayton Signs Special Session Budget
This week on Tuesday, Governor Dayton took action on the bills passed during our one week special session that ended last Friday at 3:00am. I’m extremely disappointed by many of the objectionable provisions within many of the bills, but I know Governor Dayton negotiated hard and is still working now to getting a better product for Minnesotans, especially undocumented Minnesotans who will continue to be forced to drive illegally without a license to provide for their families. That provision is one of five that needs to be changed or removed before he will call a special session to restore funding for the House and Senate, which he outlined in a letter to legislative leaders.
For a complete list of the Governor’s reasoning behind signing each budget bill passed by Republicans during the special session, you can find links to his explanations here.
Governor Vetoes Preemption
Republicans attempted again to pass preemption during the special session, as I mentioned in last week’s update. Thankfully, Governor Dayton stood in their way and protected the earned sick and safe time, paid family leave and minimum wage increases that over 150,000 workers across the state have been organizing to achieve in communities like Minneapolis, St. Paul and others. Governor Dayton did the right thing by protecting the benefits workers organized to earn.
