Leader Hortman Statement on Legislative Budget

Friday, June 2, 2017

SAINT PAUL – Today, the Legislative Coordinating Commission met to discuss legal action against Governor Dayton. Earlier this week, the Governor line-item vetoed the Legislature’s budget appropriation.

House DFL Leader Melissa Hortman released the following statement:

“It is premature for Republican legislative leaders to hire an attorney and start a court case before they even try to compromise with the Governor.

“Just a week ago, Republican House Speaker Kurt Daudt put the livelihood of hundreds of workers at the Department of Revenue in jeopardy by inserting a secret provision in the State Government Finance bill to force the Governor to sign the Tax bill. Now that his own paycheck is at risk, he objects to this tactic being used to resolve policy differences with the Governor.

“Governor Dayton prevented a state government shutdown by signing the Republican budget and tax bills, despite his strenuous objections to several provisions in those bills. The method he chose to try to force legislators back to the negotiating table ensures that Minnesotans will see no interruption in state government.”
