Rep. Thissen: Legislature Should Pass Clean Real ID Bill

Monday, May 8, 2017

St. Paul – Today, Rep. Paul Thissen (DFL-Minneapolis) attempted to pass a clean Real ID bill, giving Minnesotans the legal certification they need to board a plane by the January, 2018 deadline. Rep. Thissen’s amendment to a related bill would have adopted the “clean” Senate language instead of the divisive House language related to undocumented Minnesotans. Unfortunately, the Republicans insisted on continuing to add controversial language unrelated to the implementation of Real ID.

Rep. Thissen released the following statement:

“Minnesotans are on edge, unsure whether the legislature will pass the Real ID bill, allowing them unrestricted travel starting next January. The House bill includes unnecessary language relating to issuance of drivers licenses to undocumented Minnesotans. Unfortunately, Republicans continue to insist on the divisive, controversial language and so progress to Real ID continues to be blocked.

“Minnesota is running out of time to meet federal requirements and become compliant. For several months, Federal officials have been patient with Minnesota as the legislature and governor work out their differences, but have made it clear that no further concessions will be granted.

“Passing a clean Real ID bill is the right thing to do for all Minnesotans. There is no need to continue delaying implementing Real ID. I offered this amendment to put an end to the unnecessary postponement and give Minnesotans peace of mind as they make future travel plans.”
