Statement from Rep. Bernardy on Passage of Real ID

Wednesday, May 17, 2017

ST. PAUL, MN – Today, the Minnesota House of Representatives passed a clean Real ID bill, free of controversial immigration language.  The bill retains two current options for driver’s licenses/identification cards: an enhanced driver’s license or a non-compliant license or identification card. Representative Connie Bernardy (representing Fridley, New Brighton and Spring Lake Park), the DFL-Lead for the Transportation and Regional Governance Policy Committee, released the following statement:

“I’ve been working over the past two years to find compromise on a clean Real ID bill with my colleagues,” said Rep. Bernardy.  “I’m glad the House Republicans ultimately agreed to remove the controversial language that prohibits Minnesotans who are undocumented immigrants from obtaining a non-compliant ID.  This will provide an opportunity to discuss this issue as a stand-alone bill in a future legislative session.”
