Legislative Update - 11-18-15

Wednesday, November 18, 2015

Dear Neighbor,

People across the world were rightfully shocked and saddened by the attacks in Paris, France last Friday. And after news broke that at least one of the attackers reportedly posed as a refugee in order to enter Europe, some in Minnesota are questioning our nation's security measures when it comes to handling refugees.

They fear that a similar incident could occur on American soil – where terrorists pose as innocent refugees and once in our country attack hundreds or thousands of our citizens.

For this reason, I am urging Governor Dayton to ask President Obama to suspend the relocation program until the Department of Homeland Security has determined if our refugee screening process is adequate.

Last session, state lawmakers passed a new anti-terrorism law to help the Department of Public Safety combat the recruitment of Minnesotans by terrorist organizations like ISIS. But when it comes to the acceptance of Syrian refugees, that is a decision that can be made only by the federal government.

By taking a stand and using the power of his office to request a halt to the refugee screening process, Governor Dayton could convey that Minnesota supports a review of current security protocol to ensure that the highest standards are being met. Keeping our families safe must always be our top priority.

Talk to you soon,

Kathy
