REP. CORNISH HELPS APPROVE REMAINING BUDGET BILLS IN ONE DAY SPECIAL SESSION

Monday, June 15, 2015

ST. PAUL – Following an agreement between Governor Dayton and legislative leadership on a small number of budget proposals that had remained outstanding, the Minnesota Legislature approved the spending legislation in a one day special session.

"The governor vetoed three spending bills which made the special session necessary," Cornish said. "On the plus side, the budget work is now finished but we'll have a few things to address in 2016, such as a long range road and bridge funding plan as well as tax relief."

On June 12, Cornish and a majority of other lawmakers helped approve spending bills relating to K-12 Education, jobs and energy, and environment and agriculture. Legislation that allocates Legacy funding dollars and bonding proceeds also received strong bipartisan support.

Cornish said the new state budget represents one of the lowest spending increases in decades.

"Overall, we were able to do a better job of prioritizing spending this session, stopping an unnecessary gas tax increase from becoming law, and slowing the growth of state government," Cornish concluded.
