Update re: Veterans Day, DNR meeting changes, deer hunting

Friday, November 6, 2015

Dear Neighbor,

Here's wishing those who have served in our nation's armed forces a blessed Veterans Day on Wednesday.

A number of veterans' events will take place in the area. I urge people to get out to show their gratitude and offer a bit of thanks to those who have given so much. Our veterans have written a blank check to defend Americans, up to and including their own lives.

The St. Cloud VA will host a Veterans Day parade and social on the west side of its campus from 1 to 3 p.m. this Sunday. An open house, where people can thank Veterans in person, follows in the Apollo Commons. The VA also will have a Veterans Day ceremony in its auditorium (Building 8) from 1:30 to 3 p.m. on Wednesday.

St. Cloud Technical and Community College will have a Veterans Day recognition event 12:30 p.m. Wednesday. A flag raising will take place outside the main entrance of the Northway Building, followed by awards, performances and a reception at 1 p.m. at the Heartland Building (Digital Commons).

Everyone is welcome to these events and I hope you can attend.

Schedule changes for DNR groundwater forums

There are changes to the public meeting schedule for the DNR's Groundwater Threshold Project – and they will take place in Ramsey, closer than the previous Golden Valley site for those of us who live west of the Twin Cities.

The next two meetings now will be 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on both Thursday, Nov. 12 and Thursday, Dec. 10 at the city of Ramsey Municipal Center (7550 Sunwood Drive NW, Ramsey).

As I noted in a previous letter, public participation is important in this process as the DNR establishes a plan. Again, click here to see a recap of a previous meeting and see what was discussed.

Good luck and be safe during deer season

Best of luck to deer hunters as the firearms season begins Saturday. The DNR indicates deer sightings by hunters should be up in many areas this fall, but that we also can expect another conservative season as a restrictive harvest allows deer populations to rebuild across much of Minnesota. One-deer limits are in place across most of the state. Here is a link to more information from the DNR on deer hunting.

On a side note, even non-hunters are encouraged to wear blaze orange if they are out enjoying the great outdoors during deer season. Please be safe.

Good luck,

Jeff
