Legislative E-Update - Final month of Session, Visitors to the Capitol, Your Legislators, Partner of the Year award

Friday, April 21, 2017

Neighbors and Friends,

The Easter and Passover break has concluded and we returned to St. Paul on Tuesday to begin wrapping up the 2017 legislative session. Here is an update

Session enters final month

We have a full agenda ahead as we aim to complete the budget process before the constitutional adjournment deadline of May 22. Most finance bills have been passed and either are in conference committee or will be shortly. House and Senate conferees were appointed by the Speaker of the House and Senate Majority Leader to compare the two versions of each finance bill. Governor Dayton will also be very involved in the process as we seek to reach agreement on the final budget.

Visiting the Capitol

Each day, groups come to the Capitol to meet with legislators for their annual “Days on the Hill.” OutFront Minnesota, the Minnesota Street Rod Association, Minnesota Water Action and Wind Energy were among those here this week.

I spoke to Habitat for Humanity visitors holding their annual event at the Capitol.

Minnesotans travel from all corners of the state advocating for issues they strongly support. I’m inspired by their dedication to making Minnesota the best possible state.

Your Legislators program

A wide range of topics were covered on the weekly episode of the Pioneer Public Television Program – Your Legislators. I joined colleagues Sen. Nick Frentz (N.Mankato), Sen. Jerry Relph (St. Cloud) and Rep. Jeff Backer (Browns Valley) for an interesting discussion of issues we are considering at the Capitol. To view, click HERE

2017 Saint Paul College Community Partner of Year

Last week, I was honored to receive the Saint Paul College 2017 Community Partner of the Year award.

The Saint Paul College expertly prepares its students to be productive members of our 21st century workforce. It is greatly appreciated as a community and regional asset.

Saint Paul College President Rassoul Dastmozd also announced that an annual endowed scholarship in my name will be awarded to a student in the Trades programs. As the DFL Lead on Capital Investment, the scholarship is very meaningful. Those working in the skilled trades build and improve infrastructure across the state making Minnesota a place where people want to live, work and raise their families.
