Higher ed. forum and holiday blessings

Thursday, April 2, 2015

Dear Neighbor,

The focus of this week has been on meeting with people in our area as the Legislature takes a brief hiatus to observe the Easter/Passover holidays.

As chairman of the House Higher Education Committee, I have been meeting with some of our two-year colleges this week. One of those meetings was a forum named for former Sen. Gordon Rosenmeier at Central Lakes College in Brainerd. The event had great attendance, with approximately 225 on hand.

I addressed the general topic of higher education financing to the group, including personal anecdotes about college and how the financing of has changed of the years. One point I emphasized is that preparation – knowing where you are going, having a purpose and assessing costs – is one way students can close the financing gaps they encounter at the end of their schooling. Another point I made is that students should be prepared for change along the way because you just never know how things will evolve.

On a side note, we also took a tour of CLC as part of the visit. That is an impressive facility with an enrollment of around 6,000. Thank you to former long-time House member Steve Wenzel for hosting this event.

House members will return to St. Paul next week and I really appreciate the input local citizens provided during a recent string of town hall meetings in the district. The biggest decisions of the session are right around the corner and the discussions we had with citizens will be very helpful as we face those challenges.

If you were unable to attend any of the town hall meetings, your comments on the issues always are welcome via email. I will keep you up to speed as things come to the forefront at the Capitol and, until then, have a safe Easter/Passover.

Sincerely,

Bud
