A Quick Update From St. Paul

Friday, January 29, 2016

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

This weekend we have many great youth sporting events to enjoy – get out and enjoy one of the remaining weekends of the winter sport season! The warm weather hasn’t melted all the snow (yet) so take in some skiing or skating at our new ice trail in Central Park, too!

Here are the highlights from our capitol this week:

  1. Veteran Service Location Opens in Maple Grove
  2. ISD 279 Meeting
  3. Probate Bill
  4. Making a Murderer – Dean Strang Meeting
  5. Maple Grove Historical Museum

Veteran Service Location Opens in Maple Grove

At the grand opening of the Veteran Services location in Maple Grove this week, we gathered to thank our Veterans and discuss how this new location – right here in Maple Grove – makes it easier for Veterans to apply to the Veterans Administration for compensation, pension, longterm care, and health care. If you’re a Veteran in need of assistance, call 612-348-3300 to make an appointment.

ISD 279 Meeting

We are fortunate to have such dedicated and talented educators in Maple Grove and Osseo. Today I visited with the Superintendent and other school leaders discussing the district’s mission and legislative platform. Once again, education will be a main topic during the upcoming session, and I welcome your input.

Probate Bill

This week I chief authored a consumer friendly bill that provides a variety of reforms to our probate system. My bill would help in making this cumbersome judicial process a little less burdensome. I look forward to discussing this bill in committee when the session starts, and hopefully becoming law later this spring.

Dean Strang Meeting – Making a Murderer

Mr. Strang was at the capitol this week for a discussion about judicial reforms. It was an engaging dialogue about how we can make our government more efficient with some stories and insight from the famed documentary “Making A Murderer”.

Maple Grove Historical Museum

Our community is blessed with rich cultural resources such as the Maple Grove Historical Museum. This treasured collection of our history is now open the second Sunday of each month – and the museum is open by appointment for special events and tours. Call Roger at 763-425-2233 to schedule a tour.

If you have a second, be sure to check out my legislative session preview in this week’s Osseo Maple Grove Press. Give it a read and let me know your thoughts.  The session starts March 8th and I want to hear your bill ideas and how we can make our government more efficient. It is my privilege to represent our great community – thank you!  I can be reached at Rep.Dennis.Smith@house.mn, by phone at (651) 296-5502, or US mail at 13570 Grove Drive, #370, Maple Grove, MN, 55311.

Have a great weekend!

Dennis
