Legislative Update - March 31, 2017

Friday, March 31, 2017

Dear Neighbors,

The third legislative deadline is today and legislators are busy with committee meetings, floor sessions, and visitors advocating on the issues important to them. We are starting to debate the House budget proposals on the floor this week. Yesterday, we debated the Environment & Natural Resource budget and Tax budget bills. Today we are taking up the House budget proposals for Education and Transportation. These major budget bills are assembled by the majority and called “omnibus” bills, because they include many provisions heard in committee from a variety of legislators.

House Omnibus Bills

Every two years the majority party groups each part of the state budgets overseen by individual committees together and passes them as omnibus bills. Omnibus bills contain many provisions from many individual bills that were heard in committees throughout the session. If you would like to read more about omnibus bills you can click here. After these bills move from the House, they will have to be compared with their companions in the Senate during conference committees, and then return to the full House to be voted up or down by Representatives.
